I am trying to sort my report by created on date with a sub-sort on Amount owed. It sorts correctly on the created on date but when i introduce the sub-sort on the Amount nothing changes. Any help here is appreciated.

This is most likely due to there being time data in your date column. What you need to do is to add a calculated column of get date. Set the field as the column you want to sort on. Use this newly created column as your primary sort. It should no longer be carrying time data so your sub sort on amount should now work.
