Changing from FileData to File Reference?

In one app, we have a FEE with data type FileData where we store attachments. We need to change this to file reference to allow larger attachments. If we change the data type, will records in process (waiting approvals etc) go to exception?

Yes if you change the Data Type the Records in process will likely go to exception.
