Showing a sign such as a dollar sign in a number box is not possible. This, however, can be worked around by using a Currency Box.
Text Box
Showing a sign, such as a dollar sign, in a text box can be done using a watermark. This solution only shows the dollar sign while no text has been inputted, however.
In most cases, if using a dollar sign is desired, aim to use a currency box.
