Best way to debug hang/disconnect on custom report

Im looking for guidance as to the best way for me to debug something like that with a custom report data source. I build a new report and select the custom data source. It spins for a long time, but it eventually loads. I save it (just in case), then I try to add a filter and I very quickly get a popup dialog about my connection being lost and it trying to reconnect. I never get a reconnection. If I close the report and then reopen it, sometimes I get the "reconnecting" message. What would be the best steps for me to take to diagnose/debug/correct this?

Peanut,
My first stop would be the primary logs. Is the report data source directly from the code or is there a flow? If there is a flow, you can add custom logging steps. The profiler can also useful.
