It depends on what permission you give them when you assign group permissions to the folder. Typically, users will only need the first Can Use permission to access the folder. This will give them the ability to use it but not to edit or delete the data in it. The only way they would be able to potentially harm that data would be if they have permissions to Edit, Delete, or Administrate as pictured below.
