keys.dat fields/purpose

Hi,
Our security team has asked me to find out from you which fields in the database are encrypted using the keys.dat keys? I know that if I create a data structure and choose “Encrypt field” that it will use that, but I don’t know what are the other purposes of keys.dat?
Basically, if we sync a database between two Decisions installations and do not have the same keys.dat, what impact would it cause?
Thanks.
